Today I have a mash up of projects. Let's start with my Mission Quilt aka Project #2. I got the top all put together.
I also got the back pieced. And I am happy to say I have very little "bug" fabric on my shelves of Yea!!!!
So now I need to get it layered up and put it on the bottom of the pile of quilts to be quilted.
Just above the mission quilt, comes a quilt that I made for charitable donation, (probably at the end of the year), to the women and children's homeless shelter. I get together with a group of women on Wednesday afternoons to sew quilts that are all donated. Some of us have been together for a lo-o-ong time. Others are rather new to the group, but we all get on together very nicely. And we sew while we listen to each other's joys and challenges. From January to June we make lap robe size to twin sized quilts that travel with a senior high youth group from the Chardon United Methodist Church when they spend a week somewhere (it varies from year to year depending on where the national Appalachian Service Project needs them) in Appalachia rehabbing houses for people in extreme poverty. Then from July to December we make smaller quilts and put them in quilted bags to take downtown to Laura's Home (the shelter in Cleveland) for the children that are there. We don't sew every Wednesday. It is dependent on the schedule of our group wrangler, the famous Mary Huey. (You should follow her blog (Maryhueyquilts.blogspot.com) if you want to see beautiful quilts. She is much more prolific that I.) Anyway, I often sew quilts for this purpose at home when we don't get together, and this is a quilt that I got layered up a couple of weeks ago.
The fabric shown here came from my mother-in-law, Jeannette Dingeldein. When she died two years ago, and I was part of emptying her house for sale, I took fabric that she had collected that I thought I could use for a good purpose. I added half square triangles to make Flying Geese strips from a box of plaids and stripes that are stored at my house.
I think that Mom would be pleased to know that she contributed to keep a child warm and knowing that someone cared about them enough to make a quilt just for him (or her). And I think she would like the look of the quilt.
So I guess it's time to get George (my quilting machine) fired up and get to work on quilting instead of just piecing! :-D
